China Broadens Online Video Censorship Rules

China already blocks many overseas video sites, including YouTube, but its State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television (SARFT) is of the opinion that more must be done to safeguard the mental health of young people. To that end, it is now requiring video website administrators to prescreen and block "vulgar" material, specified as that containing violence, pornography, and some swearing. It has been suggested that the vague nature of the guidelines was an intentional move on the part of the government censors, as it leaves them with the final say in what does or does not pass muster.
