Traveling to new environments, particularly those more than five time zones away, for athletic competitions makes even top competitors sick. It is commonly believed that exposure to germs in the confined space of an aircraft is what sickens travelers, but experts say that in all likelihood athletes are actually succumbing to the unfamiliar germs found at their destination. Researchers ruled out airplanes as the source of sickness after finding that athletes fell ill more frequently when traveling away from home than they did after their return trip. Discuss
